Yap Women's Association: Traditional Products

Yap offers travelers a unique tourist experience through it's intact ancient culture, history and traditional communities of welcoming people.

This is where the modern day fast-paced world meets up with a part of human history and one of the few places you can experience the mix.

Yap might be a tiny remote island, but global issues are here with equal impact.

Climate change, cultural preservation, food security, community planning, and sustainability, are a few.

As Yap modernizes, people are getting together to decide how to carry the island forward while preserving individual, family, community and traditional values, teaching their children through oral history and maintaining healthy local diets.

The Yap Women Association has undertaken the first steps in facing these challenges as the people move into their future, and are offering handmade traditional island crafts to fund local projects.

Baskets, jewelry, art and crafts made traditionally in the villages are available to purchase from a non-profit organization benefiting key initiatives here on the island.

The women have a plan to keep Yap culture strong and take steps forward in the modern world.

A market specializing in organic local food products, a child development center that combines cultural education and standardized schooling as well as a line of traditional handmade items and clothing are funded through the proceeds of these items.
